Status Update - October 2022

Here’s a Halloween update from my corner of the world!

I’m halfway through the first semester of my senior year in college, and I’ve been reading at a pace unmatched so far in my life—including grade school glory days. Goodreads (which I’ve finally signed up for—I know, right) is helping me catalog most of it: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s entire canon for my author study course, a host of dense climate literature for my honors thesis prep course, and for-pleasure books I’ve somehow managed to squeeze in, including the newest releases from some of my favorite authors.

Goodreads can’t, however, keep track of the never-ending stampede of submissions to the marvelous Missouri Review I’m receiving each week, but it does allow me to post book reviews. I’ve decided, after getting great feedback on my TikToks for TMR (and per my prior promise that I'd be more active on social media), to turn some of these written reviews into video reviews to be better heard across my personal platforms. As far as I can tell (and despite my general distrust of TikTok), it’s working. The process of making the videos is painstaking, but it’s paying off.

My first video review is up now. It’s about Donna Tartt’s classic The Secret History; I’ve decided to loosely theme my autumn reviews around books that feature “dark academia” moods and motifs popular in bookish circles online. Next, I’m planning on filming videos for The Atlas Paradox by Olivie Blake and Greywaren by Maggie Stiefvater. We’ll see where this takes me.

Goodbye for now and thanks, as always, for reading! Happy Halloween!
